Then click on the background layer so that it is selected.

Vector all the light parts of the hair. You may even need to zoom in even more to do the details. Remember to click on the background layer each time you begin an outline.

Next vector the next shade darker.

When finished hide the background layer to look at your hair. It should look something like this, but if it doesn't that's okay. Just move on. It will come w/practice as you do more and more vector. (CLICK ON IMAGE FOR FULL VIEW 44KB)

I guess it kinda helps to actually know how to draw and not rely on Photoshop too much... But still, the pen is kinda confusing and I feel like if I try to fix anything, it'll mess up even more because I don't get it yet.

Other than that... Is it even okay to submit other people's tutorials? Just a general question.

I think, you'll find it better once you learn about the "alt key". You probably get stuck when trying to curve the pen right? If the pen is curved the wrong way, click on the point by first holding alt. this will remove the trajectory of the curve and start a new curve instead of basing it on the other path.

you mean to good-tutorials? this tutorial and been submitted a long time ago, and it's in the gt database. the author gave me permission to use it. Still one of the best vector tuts out there. I haven't heard from her in a while though.
